PAPERCRAFT OBJECTS: FIRST PROTOTYPE

Image
For this papercraft project, we had to make our chosen object in Rhino, unfold it, print it on cardstock and cut and fold it together. I chose to create a kiln and I decided a kiln because I thought it would be enough of a challenge for me while also still being attainable to create. I'm also a ceramics major who is still learning how these kilns work, so why not make a model of it to understand it better? And because I thought it would be a fun object to make out of paper, as the real-life objects are huge and heavy, and this paper version is small and light.   The kiln I was using for reference was this:  And we also have these in the studio in various sizes:     I started with designing my kiln in rhino and unfolding all the pieces. I made the kiln itself, with its lid, the three peeps on the front that are used for venting in real kilns, the control box (that has no details right now) and the square base with four triangular legs. Next, I printed out a...

PAPERCRAFT: RESEARCH

Chosen article:  Meticulously Handcrafted Paper Objects by Zim & Zou For this week's second project, we had to pick an article and explain why it inspires us. I chose "Meticulously Handcrafted Paper Objects by Zim & Zou" by Christopher Jobson. Lucie Thomas and Thibault Zimmermann, also known as Zim & Zou, are a French paper crafting duo that uses materials like paper, wood, thread, and leather to create objects. They've created window displays, editorial illustrations and posters.     Their work is centered around paper, which they draw, cut and assemble by hand. They like paper because of the colour possibilities and its unique textures. They create objects ranging from animal forms to functional objects, to landscapes and abstract designs. They're inspired by nature around them and various technologies, which they take and turn into unique and colourful concepts. Their work also tells stories relating to the beauty of nature, childhood nostalgia and ...

PAPERCRAFT OBJECTS: DIGITAL SAMPLES

Image
For this papercraft objects project, we had to create 8 faceted forms that can be unfolded into flat templates. My idea was to make things I'm familiar with or see a lot, everyday mundane items. I struggled with time and making sure everything was planar so I decided to keep my objects simple.  I started with a bowl. Then I attempted to make a bathtub, but the scale was off and I wasn't able to execute it as nicely as I would have liked. Next, I made a vase, I'm imagining this dish as ceramic. Then a pitcher. A very simple plate. I tried making a spoon, but I was having trouble joining the pieces together and making it angled in the right places, so I settled for a reasonably flat spoon.  I look at this exact shelf in my room every day, so I thought I'd make it. This is supposed to be one of those tall Starbucks cups.  - Cait

MILESTONE PROJECT 1 - MESH MASHUP

Image
For this mesh mashup project, I chose to work on my "Mushroom Street Lamps" from the last project, because I thought it would benefit from meshmixer and the lighting options the best out of all my objects. I started with finding some new mushroom meshes, as the ones I originally chose weren't that great, then I separated all the objects I wanted in meshmixer, which allowed me to assign them all a material and colour. I started with some simple renders then started to try new things toward the end, I also had some fun with the glow after-effect in rhino. #1 #2 #3 #4 #5 #6
